Spring 2024: "How can we create a space for our Community to Gather in?" Creating a Community Space: A Journey in Project-Based Learning

In a world where digital interactions often overshadow face-to-face connections, the need for physical community spaces has never been more critical. This truth became the focal point for Gaining Ground students undertaking a project-based learning unit with the guiding question: "How can we create a place for our community to gather in?" This question not only sparked their creativity but also underscored the importance of fostering communal ties through shared spaces in their Tulsa Community.

The Power of Project-Based Learning

Project-based learning (PBL) is an educational approach that empowers students to learn by actively engaging in real-world and personally meaningful projects. Unlike traditional rote learning, PBL encourages critical thinking, collaboration, and communication. Students grew in their literacy skills and 21st century skills as instruction was scaffolded to meet the students needs. For this project, students were not merely passive recipients of knowledge; they became active problem solvers and decision-makers.

The Journey Begins: Understanding the Need

The project kicked off with students exploring the concept of community gathering places. Students started by exploring the Tulsa Gathering Place to examine all of the needs being met within this public space. The first part of programming focused on creating an inclusive playground. The second half focused on adding amenities around the playground that make their gathering space unique.

Research and Planning

With a solid understanding of the importance of communal spaces, the students embarked on research. They surveyed their local community to gather insights into what people wanted in a gathering place. The read books, discussed, and explored other components such as water features, sidewalks, meeting spaces, food areas, and more. Armed with this data, the students collaborated to draft plans that would address these varied needs. They sketched designs and created models. They invited families and community members and to see their final model.

Building the Vision

Once the plans were finalized, the students began the process of turning their vision into reality. .

The Unveiling: A New Community Space

The Importance of Gathering Places

Through this project, the students not only created a tangible asset for their community but also internalized the broader significance of their efforts. Gathering places are essential for fostering a sense of belonging and unity. They provide a venue for people to connect, share experiences, and support one another. In an increasingly fragmented world, these spaces help bridge gaps and build stronger, more resilient communities.

Lessons Learned

The success of this project-based learning unit extends beyond the creation of a physical space. It instilled in students a sense of civic responsibility and the knowledge that they can effect positive change in their community. They learned that collaboration, perseverance, and creativity are key to solving real-world problems.

Conclusion

This project exemplifies the transformative power of project-based learning. By addressing a real community need, students not only gained practical skills but also developed a deeper appreciation for the importance of communal spaces. As these young minds continue to grow, they carry with them the understanding that they can be catalysts for change, capable of building stronger, more connected communities.
